This dataset provides gridded modelled daily hydrological time series forced with meteorological reanalysis data. The data set is a product of the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS) and offers a consistent representation of key hydrological variables across the global domain including:

• River discharge
• Soil wetness index (root zone)
• Snow water equivalent
• Runoff water equivalent (surface plus subsurface)

Some key information:

• near global coverage
• covering years 1979 - 2025 (continuously updated)
• daily resolution
• website: https://ewds.climate.copernicus.eu/datasets/cems-glofas-historical?tab=overview
• it can be accessed through the cdsapi package.

Use cases:

• improved hydro modelling

Hi @euronion, I am currently working on my bachelor thesis at FENES with my supervisor @doneachh.
The goal of my thesis is to improve implementation of hydro in pypsa-earth, mainly via an update in atlite.
We were talking about implementing the GloFAS dataset to achieve a better implementation of hydro.

I think it could make sense to sketch a possible implementation design in a common discussion, and we'll be able then to break it down into the plan together with @StuberSimon and @doneachh, also aligning with the requirements towards the thesis. What do you think?
