As part of the Get Your Updates cycle in the Delight team (Q4 FY22) we are left with a few outstanding action items.

More information on the history of Get Your Updates can be found in the Delight team roadmap, and this quick history doc. More information and a better write up is WIP (@daniellekirkwood)

As the Delight team combines with the Web team, the following work should transition to the new web backlog:

User facing improvements

🟢 1. Update default settings
Users expect that defaults make sense and customisation is available when they need it.

• Setting the default room list sorting/appearance to Activity/Show rooms with unread messages first #24014

🟢 2. Simplify settings
If the defaults set by Element don't work for a user, we need to provide a simple and easy to understand interface where user's can update their notifications settings to match their working style

🟢 3. Remove unintentional pings
Users should only get pings when that is intended by the user. This includes improving the sender's environment as well as the receiver's.

MSC3952

• GYU: Implement MSC3952 in matrix-js-sdk #24376
  • This has to support MSC3873 & MSC3966 & MSC3758
  • Patrick has nearly finished 3873, the other 2 are new push rule conditions and the work has not yet started on these
• GYU: Implement MSC3952 in matrix-react-sdk #24377
• When the next room upgrade happens (maybe extensible events) we'll ride that train and remove the need to include empty 'mentions'
• Stabilize support for MSC3952: intentional mentions matrix-org/synapse#15487

Suppressing Edits

• Add a new default push rule to handle this
• We need to review if this MSC is needed or not, we might be able to leverage the above MSC
• Support MSC3958: Suppress notifications from message edits matrix-org/matrix-js-sdk#3721

Other decisions made:

• In this internal thread : we won't do the heavy-lifting to migrate folks on the mentions rule disabled as there are not a lot of them and it's a heavier lift than impact.

Chronic Issues

This cycle seeks to solve the following Chronic Issues:

• Users expect to be told when they have missed notifications
• Users expect DMs and mentions to notify them by default - but not random chats in group rooms. Public chats notify by default, encouraging you to mute the app.
