Issue with GitHub Copilot Free Monthly Limit Reset Date

I subscribed to the GitHub Copilot Free Plan on December 18, 2024, and fully utilized the code completion limit for the month. Afterward, I disabled the Copilot plugin to avoid using the service until my limit reset. I did this until January 20, 2025, when I expected my monthly limit to reset and for me to be able to continue using Copilot.

However, upon re-enabling the plugin on January 20, 2025, I received the following message:

"You've reached your monthly code completion limit. Upgrade your plan to Copilot Pro (30-day Free Trial) or wait until 2025-02-19 for your limit to reset to continue coding with GitHub Copilot."

This is unexpected, as I did not use any part of the service. The message suggests that my limit reset will only happen on February 19, 2025, which seems to indicate an error in the system’s calculation of my reset date.

Expected Behavior:

The monthly limit should reset on January 19, 2025, based on my subscription start date, especially considering I did not use any code completions during the new month quota of January prior to the reset.

Actual Behavior:

The system is incorrectly calculating the reset date as February 19, 2025, and showing the message that I have reached my monthly limit.

Additional Notes:

• I made sure to disable the plugin entirely during the period after reaching the limit to ensure I wasn't consuming any code completions.
• The issue seems to be related to a miscalculation of the monthly limit reset period, as no usage occurred during the gap, and my reset should have happened on January 19, 2025.

Could you please check why this discrepancy is happening and adjust my limit reset date accordingly?

I hope you will work on resolving the issue so that it does not appear to users.

I started to use Copilot in VS Code the 29 january.
Last week, it was indicated that the reset will take place on February 28.

Today it says March 29, 2026

I am also experiencing this. My usage never reset when the time changed. Here's the timeline of events:

Feb 27: "Allowance resets February 27, 2026"

Feb 28: "Allowance resets February 27, 2026"

March 1: "Allowance resets March 28, 2026"

March 2: "Allowance resets March 28, 2026"

This was on top of the message usage showing 98% and denying a request (it deducted a usage before completing a request).

If the devs cant even handle off by one errors can you really trust copilot with your code?

This is a known bug affecting many Copilot free tier users since October 2025. The reset date keeps pushing forward by one month instead of actually resetting your quota. Many users reported the same pattern

Try these methods : -

• Multiple accounts trick: Make 2-3 GitHub accounts and switch between them for fresh credits (the workaround you mentioned works)
• Student benefits: If you're a student, grab the GitHub Student pack - way better limits

Having the exact same issue. Reached the limit and was supposed to be reset on January 17th. On the 17th., it jumped to February 17th.

EDIT: Looks like it's been fixed.

Hello @adityapawar327 .
Still if I make 1 github account per month, soon I will have several to manage (now requiring also AF2 configuration).
And if I really want to be lazy, I could just create X+ accounts and use them until the credits are over, then delete them and restart again. No need for paid tier. But I am guessing this is not the logic of GitHub!
My student years are long behind me (at the time there was not copilot)...

I would recommend that you use other code editors. I personally use Cursor, Kiro, and Windsurf. You can choose a specific model you like. Kiro is currently giving away a lot of credit, which may help you :)

Keep seeing the same issue. Usage stays at 100%. It should have been reset on October 13, nothing happened, then Nov 13, nothing happened. Now it mentions it will be reset on Dec 13. Not much confidence in that tbh.

As of now 2 Feb. I am getting this message.
You've run out of free code completions. You still have free chat messages available in the Copilot Free plan. These limits will reset on March 31, 2025.
it doesn't make sense. limits should reset after 1 month.

I am also facing the same issue, despite my Github Account verfies my active student status and Github student benefits, I am getting limit exceeded error for Copilot in Vscode. I have tried reinstalling and relogging in to Copliot extention, but facing the same issue.

Edit: The issue got solved, after re-verifying for my Github Student benefits, I did not reapply to Github Copilot which was required to be applied separately, after doing that the issue got resolved.

I have been waiting until today for my limit to reset, because it previously said Feb 4, but now it's saying I've reach the limit until March 4, and I did not use any of my credits today. And I just realized it did the same thing last month. I've been waiting months for this to start working again but it keeps claiming I've used the limit when I never even had the chance to use it. It's like it keeps getting pushed back a month.

Hello, you are promoting GitHub Copilot as if it were free, but it’s not. The free usage runs out too quickly and you’re forced to pay. It’s not open source. At the very least, you should allow the use of other free models. But please don’t advertise it as free when in reality the free usage is quickly exhausted and users are forced to wait another month or pay. Please don’t ruin VS Code, which used to be a great development platform.
If this is a mistake, please clarify it publicly. Otherwise, you must clearly state that GitHub Copilot is not free. Emphasizing that it is free when the usage is extremely limited and quickly exhausted is misleading. Users deserve transparency, not deceptive marketing. If the service requires payment after minimal use, this must be explicitly communicated — no ambiguity, no hidden terms.

I have this issue. I first used the service at the start of Jan and used up my completions in a couple of days. It said wait until 31st of Jan for it to reset. I just realised that it never was, it still says it has been used, and now tells me to wait until 31st of March. That is 3 months of waiting for a reset.

Actually it seems to be something to do with timezones. Even though it displayed this message, when it ticked over 00 UTC my quota reset.

whole thing is bs! copilot wasted 30% of my monthly quota in the first 30 min pretending to fix the problem and not fixing it until I went in and pointed it myself that a single css line was causing it. then it hit me with rate limit when I told it to do a simple refactoring of all components. and they (microsoft) wonder why I will not pay for pro when free tier has awesome ability to increase my blood pressure.

I don't see GitHub will ever fix this problem. Initially, I expected my allowance to be renewed on February 28th, 2026 only to discover that it has been extended to March 28th, 2026, not pleasant at all.

I was signed into VS Code with 2 GitHub accounts (and one Microsoft account) I signed out of both GitHub accounts and back in with one of them. It's working again now.
